The theme for this year’s convention is “Going Green: Vision to Reality”.  The theme points to the importance of not just thinking “Green”, but also putting those thoughts into action.

The format for 2008 will be similar to last year.  The day-and-a-half event kicks off on Wednesday with an Opening Luncheon that begins at 12 noon.  For an hour prior to the Luncheon, the exhibit area will be open.  We are expecting over 120 exhibitors this year.

Right-to-Know Law training is another important feature of this year’s MMA Convention.  Now required of selectmen, councilors and certain other elected officials, such as clerks, assessors, treasurers, and budget committee members, this year’s convention will offer a session on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoon that meets the training requirements of the new law.

Another new law that will be discussed on Wednesday afternoon is Maine’s Uniform Building and Energy Code.  This law will have a profound impact on municipalities over the next few years.

Municipal Roundtables were a success story at last year’s convention and are being brought back in 2008.  The Wednesday afternoon roundtables will cover such topics as municipal roads, LD 1, solid waste, personnel practices, personal property assessing, school consolidation, and citizen involvement.  It’s your opportunity to ask questions, get answers, and exchange ideas.

New for the second day of convention will be program tracks for sessions on Finance, Personnel and “Going Green”.  These Thursday tracks are filled with important information for local officials.  Topics range from controlling public safety costs, to regulating windmills and other energy technologies, to financial red flags, to motivating employees, to the cost/benefits of “Going Green”. . .and much more.

The convention has a lighter side as well.  Don’t forget about all those exhibitors anxious to see you.  The exhibit area will be informative, fun to visit, and provide a great opportunity to informally network with the vendors and your municipal colleagues.

Registration materials will be posted on the MMA website by the end of June.  A registration form will also be printed in the July Townsman.

Register early!  Be part of the municipal family and attend the 2008 MMA Convention.
