PB/BA WORKSHOP

The MMA workshop for Planning Boards and Boards of Appeal will be held at the Black Bear Inn in Orono on April 3 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. This workshop is offered at several locations throughout the year. BOARDS OF ASSESSMENT REVIEW

The Maine Association of Assessing Officers (MAAO), in cooperation with MMA and the Maine Town & City Management, will hold a special workshop for members of Boards of Assessment Review (BAR) on April 11 at the Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center in Cumberland.

The workshop will cover BAR standards and procedures and explain the role of the BAR member. It will also give attendees a better understanding of the “burden of proof” requirement that an appealing taxpayer must meet.

MACA ANNUAL MEETING

The Maine Animal Control Association (MACA) will hold its Annual Training Convention on April 13-14 at the Ramada Inn in Bangor. The first day of the convention, Friday, is for the MACA business meeting which begins at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, a full day of training has been planned.

NEW MANAGERS

The annual New Managers Workshop will be held on April 4 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Several MMA staffers will make presentations. Topics include Manager Form of Government, Conflict of Interest, Municipal Liability, the Right-to-Know law, and legislative issues.

NEW CLERKS

The Maine Town & City Clerks Association (MTCCA) will offer its New Clerks Workshop at two locations in April. The first offering will be held at the Black Bear Inn in Orono on April 12 and the second one will be held at the Augusta Civic Center on April 24.

MCAPWA MEETINGS

The Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association (MCAPWA) will hold its Annual Spring Meeting and the first part of a workshop on Supervisory Leadership in Public Works Programs.

The Spring Meeting is being held April 5 at the Waterville Elks Lodge.

The Part I of the Supervisory Leadership workshop will be held April 17-19. This three-day program focuses on leadership styles, motivating employees, communications, goals, coaching, and behavorial issues. A Part II, which is a continuation of this workshop will be held May 14-16.

MANAGING CONFLICT

If you are an appointed or elected municipal official, you know that conflict comes with the job. Properly managing conflict is an important skill to have as a municipal official.

An full day, MMA workshop, titled Managing Conflict & Negotiating Change, will be held on April 27 at the Waterville Elks Lodge. The presenter of the workshop is former town manager and now a consultant/facilitator, Dana Lee.

This is an interactive workshop were the participants identify sources of conflict and come up with tangible solutions.

BASIC EXCISE

The Maine Municipal Tax Collectors & Treasurers Association (MMTCTA) will hold its Basic Excise Tax Workshop on April 19 at the Augusta Civic Center.

This workshop covers the basic procedures for motor vehicle and watercraft excise tax collection. The instructor is Gilberte Mayo of Lincoln.

EPA CONFERENCE

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 1, is hosting a forum in Groton, Connecticut on April 30-May 1, 2007 on “sustainable” water and wastewater infrastructure. Attendance is limited.
