APRIL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Spring is a busy time for training by MMA and its Affiliate Groups. Workshops that will be held in April are listed below. Detailed information and registration materials for each of the workshops listed below can be found of the MMA website, www.memun.org. New Managers Workshop
Maine Municipal Association will offer its “New Managers Workshop” on April 4 at the Augusta Civic Center. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This workshop is primarily aimed at new town managers and administrative assistants, although anyone can attend. Some of the topics to be covered include: the legal framework of municipal government, the Right-to-Know law, LD 1 and TABOR, personnel management issues and MMA insurance programs..
Vital Statistics
The Maine Town & City Clerks Association will hold its “Vital Statistics Workshop” at four locations in April. The workshop will be held on April 4 in South Portland, on April 5 in Lewiston, on April 11 in Presque Isle, and on April 12 in Orono.
This workshop is intended to provide the municipal clerk with an overview of laws, rules and regulations related to the vital records program in Maine.
APWA Spring Meeting
The Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association will hold its “Annual Spring Meeting” at the Waterville Elks Lodge on April 6. The meeting runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This year’s Spring Meeting includes presentations on garage safety, concrete pipe installation, Operation Lifesaver, and upcoming changes to diesel engines and chassis layout for heavy duty trucks. MDOT’s Peter Coughlan will also present Road Scholar Awards.
Basic Excise
The Maine Municipal Tax Collectors & Treasurers Association will offer its “Basic Excise Tax” course on April 6 at the Augusta Civic Center. Gilberte Mayo, Treasurer in Lincoln, is the instructor. The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
MWWCA Spring Conference
The Maine WasteWater Control Association has its annual “Spring Conference” planned for April 7 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. This workshop covers a variety of the nuts & bolts issues that routinely confront wastewater treatment plant operators and managers.
Animal Control Training
The Maine Animal Control Association will hold its “Annual Business Meeting and Training Day” on April 7-8 at the Ramada Inn in Bangor. The business meeting takes place the evening of April 7 and the training day follows on the 8 th.
Topics to be covered include microchipping, rabies, and feral cats.
Planning Boards/Boards of Appeal
MMA will hold one of its workshop for “Local Planning Boards and Boards of Appeal” at the Black Bear Inn in Orono on April 11.
This evening workshop provides a basic introduction to the various legal rules that govern decisions made by local planning boards and boards of appeal.
This workshop is being held at three more locations in 2006 – Presque Isle (June 14), Belfast (September 27) and Augusta (November 30).
New Clerks
Maine Town & City Clerks Association will offer its “New Clerks Workshop” on April 25 at the Augusta Civic Center and on April 27 at the Black Bear Inn in Orono.
This workshop is designed to familiarize newly elected or appointed clerks with their new responsibilities in local government.
Leadership Symposium
The Maine Fire Chiefs Association, Maine Fire & Education Training and Maine Fire Protection Services Commission are jointly sponsoring a “Leadership Symposium” on April 27-29 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. This symposium is for fire, rescue and EMS personnel.
This symposium includes a joint meeting of the three sponsoring groups, the MFCA Quarterly Meeting, three leadership sessions, and a session on Safe Highway Operations.
