A Year Replete With Training Opportunities

(from Maine Townsman, January 2008)

The 2008 Training Calendar for Maine Municipal Association (MMA) and its Affiliate Groups is replete with educational opportunities for municipal officials.  On the accompanying training calendar, there are 53 workshops/conferences that are being held at 68 different locations this year. This count includes an MWDA workshop in January that was not included in the calendar because it was being held before the Townsman was published.

Training offerings by MMA in 2008 include our traditional Planning Board/Board of Appeals (PB/BOA) workshop and the Elected Officials Workshops (EOW) series.  The PB/BOA will be held six times at six different locations this year and the EOW will be offered twice in June and twice in December.   These workshops provide basic level training for selectmen/councilors and members of planning boards and boards of appeal.

The EOW will also be available as a “host community” event in 2008.

The “host community” idea for training emerged from the 2006 MMA Membership Survey.  Several respondents to that survey urged MMA to offer more “regional training”.  In response to that request, MMA plans to offer two or three additional EOWs in 2008 at locations off the I-95 corridor and not on our regular training schedule.

This type of training must be requested by a “host community”.  The “host community” training event is different from the regularly scheduled workshop in that it is arranged “by request” of a community.  As a “host community”, municipal officials in that community will be asked to provide a facility for the training and to take the lead in getting attendees for it from neighboring communities. In 2008, MMA will provide up to three “host community” EOWs which can be held in April, September or November.  For 2008, MMA will limit the areas where “hosts” can request training to Aroostook, Washington, and Piscataquis counties.

If your community is interested in being a “host community” for an Elected Officials Workshop in 2008, please contact Michael Starn at MMA, mstarn@memun.org or 1-800-452-8786  ext 221.
