GENERAL INFORMATION:
Department: Planning & Code Enforcement
Barg. Unit: AFSCME Professional Technical Unit (Pro-Tech)
Status: Full-Time, 37.5 hours/week
Schedule: City Hall is currently piloting a 4-day work week
Grade: 5 [$27.73 – $32.84 hourly]
SUMMARY: The Planning Technician is an entry-level role providing technical support to the Planning and Code Enforcement Department. This position will be involved in regular interaction with the public, focused on planning-related items, including maintenance of digital records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree in urban planning, engineering, construction management, social sciences, or related field plus two (2) years experience with plan review, zoning/building code administration is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may also be considered. Ability to obtain State of Maine Code Enforcement Officer certification to assist in administering of zoning and land use ordinance for shore land zoning and land use regulations. Must have a valid State of Maine Driver’s License.
WORK ACTIVITIES: Provide technical assistance and information to Code/Planning staff and the public regarding programs and ordinances. Review site plans and zoning permit applications to ensure compliance with regulations. Enter and maintain permit application data in the department’s recordkeeping system. Maintain planning and land-use databases, ensuring accuracy and accessibility. Develop and maintain tracking systems along with hard copy files and records. Research and compile information on planning tasks and projects. Update department’s website with relevant planning information and resources, to include preparing public notices. Investigate violations of planning regulations and ordinances, which may include conducting site visits. Attend public meetings and support City boards and committees as required. Perform other duties as assigned.
