City of Portland - Systems and Lighting Technician


Public Works Department – Traffic – This position requires highly skilled journey level electrical and electronic work in the installation, operation, maintenance, repair and coordination of traffic signal systems, illumination systems and electrical control systems.  This position works under the direction of the Traffic Operations Coordinator and/or Supervisor and participates in the on-call program for traffic operations & Dig-Safe responses.  This position will also participate in Public Works winter operations as a plow operator.  Requirements:  High School diploma supplemented with considerable experience in traffic control technologies; or any equivalent combination of experience and training in electronics; ability to operate and maintain a computerized traffic signal system; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, elected officials, supervisors, employees, contractors and consultants.  Necessary Special Requirements:  Valid Maine Limited Electrician License in traffic signals as issued by the State of Maine or the ability to obtain a license within 6 months of hire or by reciprocity with another State or jurisdiction; must possess a valid Maine Class B driver’s license or be willing to obtain within 6 months; must have and maintain a good driving record; must pass pre-employment drug test; must successfully complete a physical assessment and fitness assessment demonstrating the ability to lift 75 lbs.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.  Desired Training:  Master Electrician’s License; IMSA Level III Traffic Signal Certification; considerable experience with traffic signal systems including closed loop signal systems and computerized traffic equipment.  Starting salary rate $878/week, plus 3% stipend for each of the Master Electrician License and the IMSA Level III Traffic Signal Certification.
