The City of South Portland is currently seeking full time (40 hours) City bus drivers to join our team.

Position Summary: This position includes bus driving along established routes, transporting buses and dispatching duties. There are opportunities for varying assignments within the position on a quarterly basis as we undergo a selection process and adjust schedules and routes.  Hand washing bus interiors, detailing, general cleaning and other light maintenance duties will also be required. Applicants must have excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide accurate and informed information, and be highly motivated for customer service excellence. Responsible for maintaining order on the bus at all times. In an emergency, must analyze the situation quickly and calmly while assertively and effectively directing passengers to safety.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Bus Service Operations and Maintenance Supervisor and the Director of Transportation.

Education Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Three to five years professional driving experience in a municipality is highly preferred.

Maine Class A or B Commercial Drivers’ License with a Passenger (P) endorsement required. Must pass a post-offer physical exam, drug screening and background checks. Must participate in DOT random drug testing protocol throughout employment. 

Must have a schedule flexible enough to support changing assignments over time which could include days, evenings, weekends or holidays.

Starting salary range effective July 1, 2023: $22.07 - $25.17 per hour ($45,905.60- $52,353.60 annually), depending on experience. The position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
