GENERAL INFORMATION:           Department:    Fire

Status:             Full-Time (40 hours/week)

Grade:             Inspector  [starting at $25.52/ hour]

SUMMARY: Performs inspections of residential and commercial occupancies for compliance with minimum code and fire safety regulations. Inspects fire sprinkler systems. Conducts fire scene investigations to determine origin and cause, and provides fire prevention educational services to the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma, or equivalent required; Associates Degree in Fire Science preferred. Must have two (2) to four (4) years related experience in a recognized Fire Prevention Bureau, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Within one (1) year of employment shall meet the N.F.P.A. 1031 “Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector I” and the N.F.P.A. 1033 “Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator I”. Applicants must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license. Certification as a Fire Inspector I is strongly desired.

WORK ACTIVITIES:  Educates and conducts various types of inspections and reviews to ensure compliance with fire and building codes, laws and ordinances in new and existing buildings. Assists in the development, implementation and presentation of fire and life safety education programs for youth and adults in schools and community group settings. Communicates in person, over the phone and electronically with permit applicants, builders and design professionals on the requirements of the Fire Code to ensure facilities are constructed and maintained safely. Exercises good judgement, observes carefully, interprets and enforces codes and ordinances firmly, impartially, and with tact. Maintains clear and concise records and reports of all public education programs, inspections and fire investigations. Prepares and presents documentation in a court of law to support fire case and origin determination. Plays an integral role in the fire safety aspects of the City’s Landlord Registration Program. Performs other duties as required.
