The Planning and Codes Department is seeking a Senior Planner with excellent communication skills to join a dynamic and innovative team working on progressive planning initiatives for the sustained growth and vitality of Scarborough, Maine. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and enthusiastic individual committed to public service and the community.

The Senior Planner will work under the supervision of the Planning Director in administering and reviewing development proposals for compliance with local regulations, preparing reports for the Planning Board, Town Council, Planning Director and other local committees, serving as technical staff to the Planning Board and other local committees, working with the Planning Director on drafting ordinances and amendments, and implementing the Comprehensive Plan and other long range planning initiatives. The Senior Planner works closely with department staff, including the Town Engineer and Code Enforcement Officers, and interacts regularly with the public, applicants, developers, and other Town departments regarding development proposals, land use regulations, planning initiatives, and general department inquiries. 

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited program in land-use planning, public administration, civil engineering, landscape architecture, landscape design, or related field.  Training should be supplemented by experience in planning and/or development design and review.  A Master’s Degree in planning or related field is desirable but not required. Five years of progressively responsible experience in a complex municipal environment is desirable. In lieu of the above, any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered at the discretion of the Town of Scarborough.

Availability to work evenings is required. This position requires outstanding communication and public speaking skills and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with municipal officials and the public.
