The Staff Planner position for the Town of Bar Harbor requires applied land use planning knowledge, as well as knowledge and understanding of local government. The Staff Planner directly responds and is under the general supervision of the Planning Director.

 

Typical Duties

  • Provides administrative support to quasi-judicial boards such as receiving and processing applications, and preparing notices, agendas, and minutes.
  • Conducts reviews of development applications such as subdivision and site plan review.
  • Assists with preparing staff reports and decisions.
  • Interprets and applies applicable town ordinances and regulations.
  • Assists with updates and maintenance of Comprehensive Plan and ordinances.
  • Conducts extensive research for special projects.
  • Writes and presents formal and technical reports.
  • Identifies community problems, issues, and opportunities that could be mitigated through better community planning.
  • Develops strategies to promote community development or efficient land use consistent with the Comprehensive Plan.
  • Writes and assists with a variety of ordinances and regulations relating to development controls.
  • Attends evening meetings.
  • Ensures that the webpage is current and maintains interaction with social media as it pertains to planning.
  • Perform other related planning/zoning work, as required.

 

 

Education, Training, and Experience

Considerable experience in land use planning which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can be obtained by completion of a Bachelor's degree in urban planning or a related field and experience of progressively responsible planning experience.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree planning, political sciences, public policy, human ecology, geography, environmental studies or other related field and 2 years of planning or related experience.
  • Outstanding verbal and written knowledge of the English Language.
  • Knowledge of local government.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances to determine compliance with such regulations.
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.

  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind.

 

 

Physical Demands

  • Requires frequent sitting and talking or hearing.
  • Requires occasional walking; using hands or fingers, handing or feeling objects, tools, or controls; and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Requires occasional lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds.
  • Requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
