JOB PURPOSE: Ensures effective operations of the Support Services Division by managing members of the Training Unit, Community Outreach Programs (Internships, Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) and Agency Compliance Units. The position is full-time with a full benefits package. Pay is commensurate with experience, with a salary range of $30.17 - $36.13 per hour. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- BLETP certified Law Enforcement Officer or eligible for a waiver from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA);
- Associate’s Degree or higher preferred;
- Correctional Officer experience is beneficial;
- Obtain and maintain any/all training and certifications, as required;
- Valid Maine Class C Driver’s License;
- Supervisory experience preferred;
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to manage a varied and complex workload;
- Strong organizational and time management skills;
- Strong computer, software, IT and systems knowledge and proficiency.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages members of the Training Unit to include agency instructors, Community Outreach Programs (Interns and VIPS Liaison Deputy), Compliance Manager/PREA Coordinator, and the two (2) Accreditation Coordinators, in the Sheriff’s Office.
- Supervises the agency accreditation processes to include Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), American Correctional Association, and the certification of the agency through the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA.).
- Guides decisions by monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures of the agency.
- Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning members, and evaluating and following up on work results.
- Ensures accurate reporting of timecards and scheduling of employees assigned to the Support Services Division.
- Regularly supervises assigned personnel, conducts equipment and uniform inspections, prepares performance appraisals, and accounts for agency equipment.
- Makes recommendations to Command Staff related to public information events/incidents, to include but not limited to reviewing media and providing recommendations related to the management of the agency’s social media accounts (ex. Facebook/Twitter). Provides Press Release recommendations and/or talking points for Command Staff during unusual or critical incidents, as needed/requested.
- Oversees and monitors the instruction of agency personnel to ensure training on new and revised laws, statutes, ordinances, procedures, techniques and equipment and ensures compliance with applicable laws, statutes, ordinances, policies, rules and regulations to meet goals and priorities. Reviews all agency training lesson plans.
- Works productively and cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, outside agencies, and the public in the performance of duties.
- Coordinates all training, reporting requirements by maintaining accurate and complete records in accordance with applicable laws, standards, policies and procedures; tracks certification(s) of staff credentials.
- Coordinates, oversees, and manages intern programs.
- Supervises the Liaison Deputy in the coordination and management of the volunteer program (VIPS).
- Makes recommendations and utilizes agency financial during budget preparation and administration.
- Recommends personnel actions to the Support Services Captain in the areas of hiring, transfer, commendations, and discipline.
- Investigates complaints and recommends corrective action.
- Contacts and cooperates with other agencies as needed.
- Conducts annual performance evaluations of assigned staff; regularly reviews job performance with staff to manage and improve performance.
- Assist the Sheriff by representing the Agency and serving on community and business meetings.
- Recommends personnel actions in the areas of hiring, transfer, commendations, and discipline.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
