The City of Sanford is seeking a dedicated and skilled Assessor to lead the charge in ensuring fair and equitable taxation for our community. This is a challenging and rewarding position that combines specialized technical expertise, leadership, and a commitment to public service. As an agent of the State of Maine, you’ll play a pivotal role in managing our property assessment program while working to build trust and transparency with the public.
Your work directly contributes to fair taxation, ensuring equity for residents and businesses in Sanford. Take on a specialized role requiring expert knowledge, critical thinking, and independent judgement. You will supervise and guide an assessing team to maintain accuracy and efficiency. This position will serve as a trusted resource for residents, helping them to understand the valuation and taxation process.
This position will conduct mass appraisals of real estate and personal property for equitable taxation purposes. The Assessor oversees the administration and maintenance of all records essential to the assessment program. You will be performing reevaluations and market adjustments as needed to ensure fair property valuations. The program will be administered in accordance with Title 23, M.R.S.A and state laws and regulations. As the Assessor you will supervise the assessing team, ensuring efficient operations and professional development. You will manage state sales ratio analysis, prepare tax commitments, and evaluate land and building assessments.
This position requires a Certified Maine Assessors (CMA) designation, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, or related field. Considerable experience in property assessment work, including record maintenance, fieldwork, personal property assessment calculations, and market analysis. Strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of state laws and regulations governing property assessment is a must. Proven ability to lead and manage a team while maintaining accuracy and fairness along with a high degree of independent judgement in applying policies and regulations to complex scenarios as also required.
You must possess and maintain a valid appropriate State of Maine motor vehicle operator’s license.
