Status:             Full-Time, Exempt (37.5 hours/week)

Grade:             12 [$92,391 – $135,642 annual]

Schedule:        Mon.-Fri. 8:00am-4:30pm. Hours may vary due to emergencies and meetings.

SUMMARY: Under direction of Fire Chief, assists and directs the City’s fire prevention and emergency management activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Associate’s degree in Fire Science (or closely related field) required, bachelor’s degree preferred. Must have five (5) years progressively responsible experience in a recognized career fire department with leadership experience and broad knowledge of collective bargaining (union) environments, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired credentials: Certified Fire Inspector I (or greater), Certified Fire Plan Examiner, Certified Fire Investigator. Applicants must have a valid State of Maine driver’s license.

WORK ACTIVITIES:  Plan, direct and coordinate all phases of City fire prevention and emergency management programs. Respond to emergency incidents, as directed, including recall from off-duty status. Assume command and direct, coordinate and supervise personnel engaged in fire investigation and enforcement of codes and ordinances. Maintain fire prevention division records and prepare reports as directed. Provide fire inspection training and attend/conduct staff meetings. Coordinate assigned activities with outside agencies and other City departments. Assist with budget preparation, including state and federal grants, as well as develop and prioritize long-term departmental planning. Participate in community events and meetings as a representative of the Fire Department and respond to citizen and media inquiries. Perform other duties as assigned.
