Status: Full-Time 40+ hours/week
Grade: 5 ($22.51/hour)
Additional hours may be required for events or emergencies.
SUMMARY: The Highway Equipment Operator performs a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks, operates trucks, Public Works equipment and vehicles as needed for roadway repairs and projects.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent, plus five (5) years experience in heavy construction and three (3) years experience as an equipment operator, or successful completion of appropriate operator training courses. Must have a valid State of Maine Class A driver’s license and experience operating heavy equipment. Background in winter operations, including plowing, sanding, equipment upkeep/maintenance and related operations is ideal.
WORK ACTIVITIES: Must be qualified to perform a variety of street and road construction and repairs. This will include loading and excavating base material, sand, gravel, and other materials, as well as grading and finish work. Perform excavation of channels and trenches for sewer, water and storm drainage. Install pipes, storm drainage systems, and manholes. Excavate, grade and cover waste material at the Solid Waste Facility/landfill. Complete accurate records of time and materials used and assist in the ordering of materials needed for various projects. Complete construction and paving inspections; may at times act as a crew leader for various operations, as assigned. Participate in winter operations such as snowplowing and snow removal. Take part in ongoing training regarding equipment skills, operations and other highway work related topics. Interact with the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Must be available for emergency and winter operations including overtime, as required. Able to follow oral and written instruction, and perform other duties as assigned.
