The Town of Lisbon is seeking a Sewer Superintendent to lead the town’s wastewater treatment operations. This is an exciting opportunity to take over from a long-tenured superintendent and oversee a stable, well-established department with a dedicated team of six full-time employees. The Sewer Department operates as an enterprise fund with a $1.8 million annual budget, ensuring financial stability and long-term sustainability.

Position Overview

The Sewer Superintendent is responsible for the overall operation, administration, supervision, and maintenance of the town’s wastewater treatment facility and collection system. This position plays a key role in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, managing capital improvement projects, and maintaining a high standard of service for the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation of the wastewater collection system, treatment plant, and pumping stations to ensure efficient flow and processing.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA, DEP, and other regulatory agencies regarding discharge standards, permits, and environmental quality.
  • Supervise and mentor a team, including a Sewer Maintenance Supervisor, Laboratory Technician, and Sewer Operators.
  • Prepare and manage the departmental budget, including operational costs and capital improvement planning.
  • Oversee system maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to ensure reliable wastewater treatment and collection services.
  • Manage sewer billing operations, ensuring accuracy and resolving customer inquiries.
  • Serve as the Site Safety Coordinator, ensuring compliance with workplace safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and municipal officials on system improvements and infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

  • Maine Grade IV (4) Biological Operator Certification is required.
  • Grade III (3) NEWEA Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within two years).

 

  • Extensive knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations, including biological and chemical treatment processes.
  • Experience managing personnel, budgets, and capital projects in a municipal or industrial setting.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to work with employees, town officials, and regulatory agencies.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $86,070.40 to $90,376.00, based on experience.
  • 4-day, 36-hour workweek (Monday – Thursday) for improved work-life balance.
