FIRE CHIEF

The Town of Orono, Maine, with a population of 11,358 and home of the University of Maine, is accepting applications for the position of Fire Chief. This position reports to the Town Manager, functions as a member of the Town’s Management Team, and is responsible for directing, planning, and managing all functions and operations of a Fire Department with a staff of 26 full-time Fire, Emergency Medical, and Hazmat responders and $3.3M annual operating budget. Salary range $95,000 - $110,000. 

The desired candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead a progressive and proactive department, encourage collaboration and teamwork, and promote high quality and integrated community service at all times. Along with ensuring highly skilled departmental personnel, major departmental goals include: continued emphasis on the concepts and philosophy of providing high quality services within a diverse community; fostering a departmental atmosphere of teamwork, cooperation, and accountability – internally, within Town government, and with external partners; and further integrating best practices in training and policy development. The successful candidate will have demonstrated strong skills in effective personnel management, communication, and strategic planning as well as budget development and fiscal oversight.

A post-secondary degree in Fire Science, Management or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is preferred, but not required; however, at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience and extensive and current fire, emergency medical, and hazmat training which allows the candidate to demonstrate expertise in all facets of Fire Administration is required. Experience with supervision and/or management of a unionized force is an asset. Firefighter I & II, and Emergency Medical Response is required.
