The City of Keene is seeking a highly motivated, detailed-oriented, self-starter to serve as Assistant City Attorney. The successful candidate will be a member of the City’s legal team, with a primary responsibility for assisting the City Attorney in advising the Mayor, City Council, and all City Departments on a variety of interesting legal issues related to municipal law, constitutional law, land use and construction law, litigation, and more. The Assistant City Attorney will also assist in advising the City boards and commissions, including land use boards such as the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment on questions of statutory construction, rules of procedure, due process, and property rights. The Assistant City Attorney will be closely involved in the City’s review and response to Right-to-Know requests, subpoenas, and discovery requests.
The Assistant City Attorney will provide support to the City Attorney in representing the interests of the City in all matters in which the City has a legal interest before any court, tribunal, or quasi-judicial body; will prepare necessary pleadings and appear as directed before any tribunal; will prepare and review legal documents, including for the purchase and sale or real property; and will attend evening meetings of the City Council, City Council standing committees, and meetings of City boards, commissions and legislative bodies.

Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and admitted to the New Hampshire Bar. Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience, preferably in a municipal law context. Excellent writing, analytical, and verbal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and WestLaw.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in working in New Hampshire government and with municipal law; experience advising on land use, including zoning and planning laws and regulations in New Hampshire; construction law; and property matters including acquisitions and eminent domain.
Salary and Benefits:
This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $79,934–$99,613 annually and will also receive an attractive benefits package which includes low deductible/low-cost health insurance, low-cost dental insurance, State of NH Group I retirement, and other benefits such as life insurance, disability, and paid time off. Municipal employees may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
