Starting Hourly Rate: $19.23 to $21.63 based on experience

The Town of Scarborough’s Community Services Department is seeking a full-time Building Service Worker/Custodian. This custodial position is responsible for general cleaning, minor building maintenance, and assisting other staff when necessary. This position will perform a wide variety of custodial duties which require the use of standard cleaning tasks, tools, and supplies. Duties may include custodial services in other town buildings as needed. Work is performed under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor.
 
We are seeking someone who demonstrates an ability to interact with the public in an effective, tactful, and pleasant manner, maintaining a positive attitude even in a stressful situation. Exhibits adaptability in performing a variety of tasks across different working environments and conditions. Has the ability to work independently, but function within a team environment.
 
Essential functions:

  • Prepares rooms for town meetings which may include a variety of setups.
  • Vacuums, sweeps, or mops floors.
  • Dusts desks, tables, counters, bookshelves, and hallways.
  • Performs basic day-to-day custodial services for the building.
  • Cleans restrooms.
  • Washes windows.
  • Collects and removes rubbish and recyclable materials.
  • Assists with snow removal and sands entry ways and walkways.
  • Follows safety protocols, participates in safety programs/seminars, promptly reports accidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor, and complies with the Town’s safety policies.
  • Assists the Facilities Supervisor as necessary and performs related works as required

 
Requirements of work:

  • Ability to work evenings
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays, as scheduled
  • Ability to be on a rotating weekend “on-call” schedule 
  • Assists the general public and staff during meetings
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to use basic cleaning equipment and chemicals

 
Certifications:

  • Valid Maine driver’s license and have demonstrated a good driving record.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications (or willingness to obtain).

 
In lieu of the above, any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered at the discretion of the Town of Scarborough.
