The Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS) seeks a Disability Specialist to join our Disability Services department. MainePERS is a dynamic organization that manages a variety of employee benefits for Maine’s public sector workers. 
Disability Specialists are primarily responsible for case management by collecting medical evidence from healthcare providers, and reviewing employment information collected through applicants/recipients and employers. In consultation with MainePERS’ Medical Review Service Provider, Specialists issue decisions related to eligibility criteria. Successful applicants will possess strong analytical and communication skills. 
Some of the essential functions of this position include: 

  • Requests, authorizes, and reviews medical evidence from healthcare providers, hospitals, applicants/recipients, and other sources, in order to evaluate and determine initial or continuing eligibility for disability benefits in compliance with MainePERS statutes, policies, and procedures.
  • Reviews and assesses medical and employment information in order to determine applicant’s ability to perform the essential functions of their employment position or recipient’s ability to perform “substantially gainful activity.”
  • Assesses feasibility and provision of reasonable accommodations to allow individuals to perform the essential functions of their employment positions.
  • Communicates frequently by telephone and in writing with members and others.
  • Analyzes reports completed by the MainePERS Medical Review Service Provider on individual files to determine the effect of functional limitations on the essential functions of a specific job.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience -OR-  associate’s degree in a relevant field and five years of complex administrative or technical experience .-OR- or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • At least one (1) year of experience must be in the application of complex laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Proficient in MS Office suite
  • Demonstrate strong analytical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
  • Must have interpersonal skills to deal effectively with diverse populations.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience which demonstrates interviewing and other skills necessary to evaluate medical evidence and related data to make complex determinations of eligibility for benefits or services. 
  • Experience relating to disability determination or vocational rehabilitation.  

Salary: Begins at $29.96/hr or $62,317 if annualized.
