The City of Auburn is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as Tax Collector. As an integral leadership role within the Financial Services department, the person in this position must possess all of the necessary skills, abilities, licenses, and certifications to fulfill the responsibilities and obligations of the Tax Collector function as it relates to all local, state, and federal guidelines.  Under the general supervision of the City Clerk, the Tax Collector supervises the operation of the tax collection and combined clerk and treasury front line customer service team for the city and serves as the appointed Deputy City Clerk in the absence of the City Clerk. In addition, this position requires adaptable skills and abilities, the use of independent judgment, and a supportive attitude. Finally, work outcomes and outputs need to be consistent and supportive of departmental mission statements, administrative goals and objectives, and the overall corporate culture. 

     The desired candidate should have a good combination of the following:   

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills 

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills 

  • Basic knowledge of tax laws and regulations (updated training provided) 

  • Great leadership skills and ability to provide support, training and constructive feedback to direct reports 

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team 

 Minimum Qualifications include:  

  • High school diploma or equivalent required 

  • Previous related business experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience 

  • State certification from Motor Vehicles and Tax Collector preferred or ability to achieve within 2 years; State certification from Maine Town and City Clerk’s Association (MTCCA) preferred but not required  

  • A good working knowledge of state laws regarding taxation, vehicle and boat registration, tax collection, reporting, and filing of documents 

  • Knowledge of state laws regarding elections, voter registration, and vital records 

  • Preferred knowledge or the ability to learn and be proficient with using various software programs and databases, including MUNIS, Central Voter Registration (CVR), SmartGov, and Microsoft Office Suite  

  • State of Maine Driver’s license, and a good driving record 

Pay range for this position is $27.75 to $38.56 per hour and is dependent upon education, training, and experience.
