PROJECT ENGINEER – TRANSPORTATION

Public Works Department

The City of Portland Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Engineering Division. This position involves highly skilled professional level work in municipal construction and engineering. Requires progressively responsible experience in construction management, civil engineering, ability to perform complex assignments under a minimum of supervision, ability to operate personal computers and utilize contemporary engineering related software, and excellent communication and customer service skills. This position is responsible for preparation of design plans and specifications for municipal public works projects (generally transportation, street, and sidewalk projects), and administration of consultant and construction contracts.

Work involves scoping, estimating, and monitoring of public infrastructure construction activities. This includes negotiating on-site challenges and opportunities with contractors, acting as the resident inspector, and recommendation and design of field changes. Work involves professional contact with other City staff, consultants, public utilities, construction contractors, the general public, stakeholder groups, various Boards & Committees, and the City Council as may be required by a particular project or program. Applicants must have the ability to present project information, schedules and work detail to a diverse audience.

Training and experience desired:

  • MaineDOT Local Project Administration certification.
  • Working knowledge of municipal infrastructure rehabilitation.
  • Facilitation and consensus-building skills.
  • Working knowledge of CAD & GIS software, and technical writing skills.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with specialization in Civil Engineering (Transportation Programs preferred).
  • Possession of an Engineer Intern Certification, and two (2) years or more of progressive work.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a working knowledge of federal and state regulations that affect current programs and projects.
  • Must possess a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license (must provide license number on application) and have and maintain a clean driving record.

Salary & Benefits:

Pro-Tech – Grade 9 – Salary range: $68,211 to $86,404.76 depending on years of experience and qualifications, plus 6% for P.E. license.
