City of Portland - Senior Human Services Counselor - Riverside Shelter

Senior Human Services Counselor - Health and Human Services Department, Social Services Division (166 Riverside Street Shelter)
Full-Time, Project Position, 37.5 Hours – Schedule is Saturday-Monday 7AM-8PM. In addition, a monthly two-hour staff meeting is required.

This is a supervisor position responsible for overseeing the operations of the newly created homeless shelter at 166 Riverside industrial Parkway. This shelter primarily serves asylum seeking individuals so experience working with asylum seeking populations is strongly preferred. This position requires direct supervision of shelter attendants.

Additional Job Responsibilities May Include:

• Completing intake paperwork with clients.
• Data quality assurance and regular communication with 166 Riverside Shelter senior management.
• This position will also be responsible for ensuring neighborhood safety checks are done regularly.

Required Skills & Experience:

• B.A. degree in Social Services or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
• Experience with homeless or low income/at risk case management.
• A positive attitude with exceptional patience.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Valid Maine Class C driver’s license (please provide license number) and personal vehicle for work use.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with employers, clients, agency providers and fellow
staff.
• Ability to work with diverse populations.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Experience with housing placement of homeless or at risk populations, mental health issues, and other barriers to self-sufficiency preferred.
• Supervisory experience in a homeless shelter or social services position preferred.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a non-union position (Grade B25) - Starting salary of $28.72/hr.
