The City of South Portland is currently seeking a 37.5 hour a week (four-day workweek) full-time Assistant to the Assessor to join our Assessing Department. This is an opportunity to join a well-run city and play a part in serving our community with further opportunities for professional growth.
Position Summary: The employee is responsible for learning, completing, and maintaining records of various daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and yearly administrative tasks according to a strict calendar within the Assessing Department. This includes organizing various physical and digital office records and meetings; communicating about and processing and filing real property transfers, tax exemption applications, and other documents; and assisting fellow staff in completing technical assessing functions. In all aspects of this job, the incumbent establishes, provides, and solidifies outstanding customer service to the public. As an agency of city government, the Assessing Department has a direct responsibility to South Portland’s citizens, to the City administration, and to the State’s Department of Property Taxation.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by advanced training in Assessing, Appraising, Bookkeeping, Bank Telling, Billing, Call Center, or Accounting required.
Experience: Three (3)-years of related experience or five years in a busy office or phone environment. Any equivalent combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Must be proficient with computer applications outlined in the job description or have a proven ability to independently learn and become proficient in new software.

Salary Range: $25.32-$28.86/hr ($49,347-$56,277 annually) depending on experience. This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
