The City of South Portland, is currently seeking an Equipment Operator I (EOI) to join the Public Works Team. This position is a full time, year-round, benefits-eligible, Union position with a rich benefits package.
Position Summary: This position is responsible for safely operating a variety of heavy construction equipment including but not limited to dump trucks, sanders, rollers, and other construction equipment used and in the construction and maintenance of the municipal infrastructure. The EOI is also responsible for being available and operating trucks and equipment during declared emergency operations as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) including but not limited to snow storms, ice storms, and hurricanes. Work involves seasonal operation variations, year round. Must be able to work long hours in adverse weather conditions. This position also requires various manual labor tasks associated with Public Works operations.
Education and Experience: Equipment operators are responsible for safe, efficient operation of trucks including performing preventative maintenance tasks and making minor repairs and adjustments on the vehicles. Drivers must have skills in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing and judging overhead and side clearances, turning radius and braking distances. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations for moving vehicles are of utmost importance. Some knowledge of methods used in such laboring duties as repairing shoulders, hard-surfaced roads and sidewalks, constructing parking areas and walkways, cleaning, and roadside debris collection. Must be a team player willing to cooperate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and outside contacts.
Must possess a State of Maine Class B CDL, or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
