The City of South Portland is currently seeking applicants for a full-time, year-round Laborer to join the Parks Department Team. This is a union position, working 40 hours per week, and is eligible for our full Employee Benefits package and Paid Time Off.

The duties will involve all aspects of grounds maintenance at municipal and recreational facilities as well as other labor tasks associated with the Parks Division operations. Duties will include grounds maintenance with mowers and string trimmers; planting bulbs, trees, and shrubs; pruning, mulching and weeding; refuse removal and assistance with other landscaping projects. This will also involve winter shoveling at Municipal Buildings and joining the Public Works team during weather related emergencies, primarily winter snowstorms. Our Parks Laborer team is also engaged for setting up many community events like Art in the Park, hanging holiday lights, hanging event banners, and maintaining our garden spaces.  The Parks Laborer works under the general guidance and direction of the Parks Foreperson or their designee.  This position has no direct reports. 

Knowledge of safety rules and practices for grounds maintenance operations are of utmost importance. Applicants may perform laboring duties in adverse weather conditions and for extended hours. The regular schedule is a 40 hour work week and may include weekend hours.

Education: Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Experience: Two (2) years of prior work experience in the Parks, Sports fields, ground maintenance or construction trades.

Must possess a valid Maine Class “C” driver’s license.
