We are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Administrative Assistant. This fulltime (38 hour) position is responsible for providing skilled administrative work in support of the Town’s Community Development Department in the Assessing and Code Divisions, as well as other Town offices when needed. This position establishes and solidifies customer relationships by handling Code and Assessing Office reception and providing outstanding customer service to the public. Work involves supporting the daily activities of the Code Officers and Building Inspector, Cumberland County Regional Assessing, and requires considerable contact with the public. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to inquiries, managing department schedules, organizing and maintaining accurate records, preparing professional correspondence, and carrying out a variety of other routine and non-routine clerical tasks. Work is performed in collaboration with other administrative staff under the direct supervision of the Community Development Office Manager and Code Officers under the general direction of the Director of Community Development. Independent judgment and ingenuity must be used in completing tasks and accomplishing departmental objectives within the established timeframes.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualities: Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; considerable knowledge of standard office procedures with excellent proof-reading skills; excellent research skills; ability to understand and answer general questions about municipal assessing, planning, and code enforcement issues; ability to interpret ordinances, rules, and policies and effectively communicate them to citizens; ability to interpret and understand zoning, code, and construction terminology; intermediate to advanced PC skill and proficiency in the following computer/software applications: Microsoft Office products, Zoom, Munis, and Vision Government Solutions; ability and willingness to learn new software programs as needed; excellent data entry skills and attention to detail; ability to touch type a minimum of 60 wpm with 100% accuracy; proficient entering data using a 10-key numeric keypad; knowledge and understanding of standard methods of property valuation, as well as direction and distance deed language; team-oriented mindset; ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines, and superior organizational skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma, or equivalent, and a minimum of two years related work experience as an administrative assistant, office manager, or other directly related position. Prior municipal, code, assessing, or real estate experience preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  The Town of Gorham offers a comprehensive package of pay, benefits, and paid time off to eligible employees. The Town currently pays 90% of the premium cost for all health insurance coverage levels and provides a generous Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) to help cover the cost of out-of-pocket medical expenses, such as deductible and coinsurance. Individuals covered by an alternative health plan are eligible for an annual medical buyout in lieu of coverage (currently $2,250 - $5,048 based on coverage eligibility). In addition to a choice between two excellent health insurance plans and paid vacation, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays per year, employees have access to dental, vision, medical and dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts, life insurance, short-term disability, IRAs, tuition reimbursement, and more. Salary range for Grade 2 positions begins at $21.38/hour; however, actual wage will depend on experience, qualifications, and budget availability.
