Deer Isle and Stonington seek to hire a full time, ten month position under the Maine Service Fellow Program. The position is targeted to individuals that have graduated from community college, college or graduate school in the past five years. The Maine Service Fellow will help the towns of Deer Isle and Stonington in their initiative to plan workforce housing solutions that are safe, attainable, and sustainable.
Located in Hancock County, the island of Deer Isle houses the towns of Deer Isle and Stonington. These are working fishing towns with active harbors and fleets of lobster boats. They are also home to creative arts programs including the internationally known Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Stonington Opera House and numerous artists and artisan galleries. The Deer Isle/Stonington Service Fellow will work with local governments to implement an innovative Housing Opportunity Program dedicated to identifying long-term housing solutions for the workforce. This initiative has three primary objectives:
- Assess the feasibility of potential housing development sites,
- Develop Housing Master Plans for identified sites and priority growth areas,
- Coordinate land-use policies and building codes in our adjoining municipalities to streamline housing development.
The fellow will be pivotal in coordinating committees, community organizing and conducting research. Deliverables in 2025 will include master plans, streamlined policies and strategies to expand housing opportunities. The Fellow will receive mentoring in theory, methods and substantive issues in planning for rural housing from experienced municipal staff.
