Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the City Engineer, the Assistant Engineer provides civil engineering design and construction management support to various projects throughout the City of Augusta. This position also provides technical support to Development Services, Hatch Hill, Planning Board, and other development projects.
Hours
Monday through Friday, 7 am – 4 pm.
Requirements
- Knowledge of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.
- Knowledge of construction measurement and layout tools.
- Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive technical plans, reports, presentations, and recommendations.
- Intermediate skill and proficiency in software routinely used on the job, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams), database applications, and basic knowledge of GIS (geographic information systems) software. Comfortable using technology common to the field, such as smartphones, tablets, GPS devices, and general office equipment. Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new software and equipment as required.
- Working knowledge of the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), including Part 6 on Temporary Traffic Control.
- Knowledge of construction inspection, estimating, and contract administration.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public and work effectively with a variety of people, including the general public, City staff, contractors, elected officials, and individuals representing outside agencies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to adhere to established safety standards while performing job functions.
- Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities with minimal supervision and general direction.
- Ability to consistently demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct in all interactions and decision-making while performing the duties of this job.
- Strong public speaking skills with the ability to effectively present to groups of people.
- Ability and willingness to work the established schedule with extended hours as needed, including occasional evening meetings and infrequent weekends.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle to transport self between various facilities and project sites.
- Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
Pay Scale
This is a full-time, exempt, non-union position with a comprehensive benefits package including: medical, vision, dental, short term disability insurance, a pension, and generous paid time off.
Pay range NU 19: $33.95 to $47.12 per hour.
