Position Type: This full-time position averages 42 hours per week, following a schedule of 24 hours on, 48 hours off, 24 hours on, and 96 hours off.

Salary: Starting pay for Basic EMTs is $29.90 per hour, with higher rates available for Advanced EMTs and Paramedics based on certification level and experience. In addition, pay increases are available for longevity within the department. We also offer educational stipends for Associate, Bachelor, and Master’s degrees, regardless of whether they relate to fire or emergency services.

Job Description: A Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) serves as a dual-role member of the department, with responsibilities in emergency medical care in addition to firefighting duties. As part of a transporting EMS agency, personnel provide direct pre-hospital care and ambulance transport for patients in emergency and non-emergency situations. Depending on the situation, they administer basic life support, engage in extrication and rescue operations, or participate in firefighting and hazard control activities. This role requires technical expertise, patient interaction, independent assessment and treatment of medical emergencies, adherence to established treatment protocols, and accurate documentation for medical records. Work is often performed under challenging conditions, with potential exposure to contagious diseases and environmental, chemical, or physical hazards.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of a platoon, a Firefighter's duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Responding to fire alarms, deploying and connecting hoses, operating nozzles, climbing ladders, using chemical extinguishers, and utilizing various firefighting equipment.
  2. Performing ventilation to release heat and smoke, placing salvage covers to prevent water damage, and preventing fire rekindling.
  3. Driving and operating motorized firefighting equipment as assigned.
  4. Receiving and recording telephone fire alarms and other emergency calls, as well as assisting in dispatching the appropriate apparatus and equipment.
  5. Conducting routine maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  6. When assigned to fire prevention, conducting inspections and necessary clerical duties under the supervision of a superior.
  7. Carrying out related tasks as required.

In addition to firefighting responsibilities, a Firefighter/EMT:

  1. Administers basic and advanced life support to sick, injured, or convalescent individuals at emergency scenes or during transport to medical facilities.
  2. Provides emergency medical care, including hemorrhage control, automated external defibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway maintenance, and fracture stabilization.
  3. Records essential event information, patient condition, treatments, vital signs, and scene observations.
  4. Follows established medical protocols.
  5. Relays patient information to physicians both via radio transmission and direct contact.
  6. Maintains daily response logs and equipment inventories.
  7. Operates emergency vehicles during responses and patient transportation to hospitals.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  1. Proficiency in operating all apparatus and equipment, including firefighting techniques, rescue operations, and emergency medical care.
  2. Competence in administering approved emergency medical care.
  3. Familiarity with fire department rules and regulations.
  4. Knowledge of equipment maintenance.
  5. Understanding of building construction, related codes, electrical power codes, hydraulics, and the identification of hazardous occupancies within the municipality.
  6. Mechanical aptitude.
  7. Knowledge of water systems and water mains.
  8. Physical agility and strength to perform demanding work in adverse conditions.
  9. Ability to remain calm and act swiftly under pressure.
  10. Proficiency in comprehending and following oral and written instructions.
  11. Skill in operating firefighting and rescue equipment, including motor vehicles.
  12. A willingness to participate in community initiatives throughout the municipality.
  13. Completion of a standard senior high school or technical school program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job efficiently. 
  14. Maine-Certified or Pro-Board Firefighter 1 & II (NFPA 1001 qualifications)
  15. Maine-Licensed EMT, EMT-A, or EMT-P (EMT-P preferred)
    1. ALS Providers must have ACLS, PALS, and PIFT
  16. AHA CPR
  17. EVOC
  18. Maine Driver’s License

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy equipment and patients.
  2. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities in various weather conditions.
  3. Must pass a physical agility test and medical exam.
