The Town of Wells is seeking a Mechanic for the Department of Public Works. This is a highly technical position requiring skills and knowledge applicable to vehicle maintenance and repair of a variety of automobiles, trucks, and light and heavy-duty construction equipment. The ability to effectively communicate and work well with others is essential.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two or more years of advanced automotive and diesel technical training; and five to seven years of heavy equipment maintenance and repair experience are preferred, along with a high school degree or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience.
- A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for this position, with a Class A CDL preferred. Candidates must have a clean driving record.
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- The capability to maintain computerized parts inventory, supply and work order management systems is required
- Performs and coordinates the repair and servicing of automotive and construction equipment, whether performed at the garage or off-site
- Maintains parts room inventory, including but not limited to labeling, issuing, and charging parts
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and Town safety rules and regulations along with other applicable safety standards
- Prepares work orders; schedules, supervises, and inspects the work of others assigned to repair of equipment
- Determines the need for minor and major repairs on equipment and maintenance of Public Works garage equipment/facility
- Responsible for the physical organization of the garage, including cleanliness and the care and use of tools
- Monitors fuel and oil inventories and prepares monitoring and inspection reports
- Assists in preparation of memorandums regarding the Town’s need for replacement of and major repairs to municipal vehicles and equipment for the department’s annual budget requests
- Reports for work, when deemed necessary, other than during regular work hours
- Maintains a computerized preventative maintenance program for the Town’s equipment and parts room
- Assists the department head and other municipal staff regarding the priority, coordination, and scheduling of equipment services, repair work and parts inventory
- Assists in preparing bid specifications for the purchase and repair of municipal vehicles
- Ability to understand, operate and maintain computer equipment and software
- Assists in preparing regulatory reports
- Candidates shall provide their own mechanics’ tools
- Candidates for employment in this position must also be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, to include physical and drug screen testing. The ongoing requirement for successfully maintaining this position is regular participation in an established DOT substance abuse testing program.

The Town of Wells offers an excellent pay and benefit package. This is a union position with a starting hourly range of $33.89 - $43.25, depending on factors including demonstrated knowledge, experience and overall qualifications.
