Position Overview:
The Town of Fort Kent is seeking a skilled and experienced Public Works Grader/Equipment Operator. This individual will be responsible for operating a motor grader and other heavy equipment to maintain and repair the town’s roadways and infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in equipment operation, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Grader Operation: Safely operate a motor grader to grade and maintain gravel roads, shoulders, and ditches.
- Equipment Operation: Operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and snowplows, for a variety of public works projects.
- Road Maintenance: Perform tasks such as grading, leveling, and smoothing roads to ensure safe and efficient transportation routes.
- Snow Removal: Participate in snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and salting town roads and public areas.
- Inspection and Maintenance: Regularly inspect and perform routine maintenance on graders and other equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including equipment usage, maintenance activities, and materials used.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Emergency Response: Respond to emergency situations, such as snowstorms or road hazards, which may require working outside of regular hours.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other public works staff to coordinate projects and ensure the timely completion of tasks.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of three years of experience operating a motor grader and other heavy equipment in a public works, construction, or similar setting.
- Licenses:
Valid driver’s license and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred or must be obtained within a specified timeframe.
Proficiency in operating a motor grader and other heavy equipment. Strong understanding of road maintenance and construction practices. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Ability to follow instructions and work independently and any other job tasks as necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds). Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, bending, and working in various weather conditions. Stamina to work extended hours during emergencies or peak seasons.
