Position Overview:
The Town of Fort Kent is seeking a skilled and dedicated Public Works Mechanic/Equipment Operator. This individual will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Public Works-town-owned vehicles and equipment, as well as operating various pieces of public works equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical background, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on town-owned vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to trucks, loaders, backhoes, graders, snowplows, and other machinery.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate various pieces of public works equipment for tasks such as road maintenance, snow removal, and other public works projects.
- Diagnostic Work: Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical issues and implement effective solutions.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work, including parts used, labor hours, and services performed.
- Emergency Response: Respond to emergency situations, such as snowstorms, equipment breakdowns, which may require working outside of regular hours.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to ensure safe working environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other public works staff to coordinate projects
- Inventory Management: Monitor & maintain an inventory of parts & supplies for repairs and maintenance.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Technical training or certification in automotive or diesel mechanics is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Experience operating heavy equipment is required.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred or must be obtained within a specified timeframe.
- Skills:
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills, Proficiency in the use of diagnostic tools and equipment and Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Basic computer skills for record-keeping and inventory management and any other job related tasks as necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including bending, climbing, and to work various weather conditions. Stamina to work extended hours during emergencies or peak seasons.
