City of Augusta-Public Works Supervisor II

The Supervisor II performs supervisory work requiring a high quality of skill and knowledge in Public Works maintenance and construction activities.

Work involves supervising, scheduling, and coordinating a crew of equipment operators, drivers, and laborers engaged in road construction and maintenance, winter operations including snowplowing, sanding and removal, and other Public Works projects.  The Supervisor II participates in the operation of equipment for training purposes.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor – Public Works and is subject to review through reports made and results achieved.

Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.  Occasional non-standard hours and some weekends may be required.

Requirements

  • Supervises a crew in repairing streets, patching potholes, sweeping, removing and replacing curbing, cutting roadside trees and brush, rubbish/recycling collection, and related activities.
  • Inspects work to insure conformance with given standards (i.e. safe work practices and proper construction/maintenance techniques) and makes necessary adjustments in assignments and methods to correct deficiencies.
  • Instructs and trains crews in the use of Public Works equipment.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment to perform back-up operations when required.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Supervises a team of operators, drivers, skilled personnel, laborers, and at times, outside contractors.  Will be assigned a work crew and equipment of varying capabilities to accomplish a given task(s).
  • Ability to lay out, direct and supervise a crew performing construction or maintenance activities to obtain efficient results and quality work.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with employees and to effectively obtain satisfactory work output.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Must be available for on call duty.
  • This CDL position is classified as safety sensitive.  An employee in this classification must participate in the drug and alcohol-testing program prescribed by FHWA rules and the City of Augusta Alcohol and Drug Policy and Testing Procedures as a condition of employment.
  • Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, pull, push and reach.

High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid CDL A or B State of Maine motor vehicle operator's license.  Previous supervisory experience and considerable experience with operations involving various heavy and light equipment, construction, and road maintenance required.  Experience with winter snow operations highly desirable.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, position with a comprehensive benefits package including medical insurance, a pension, and generous paid time off.

Pay Range Non-Union Band 14: $24.18  to $32.96  per hour, depending on the skills and background of the candidate.
