POSITION DESCRIPTION
Department: District Attorney Job Title: Legal Secretary/Restitution
Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly Office Hours: 7:30am-4:30pm
Starting Salary: $21.00/hr. Total Hours: Full-Time Position 40hrs.
Job Summary:
The Legal Secretary works directly under the supervision of the Office Manager and the District Attorney’s designee.
Representative Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for obtaining information requested by the Assistant District Attorneys from police officers and other agencies
- Responsible for setting up case files and keeping track of each case
- Responsible for keeping track of deferred disposition and administrative release cases
- Responsible for maintaining the Restitution Program within the District Attorney’s Office. Keeping track of all restitution ordered by the Courts. Making sure restitution is paid and documented on the files.
- Responsible for drafting letters to victims regarding restitution, drafting motions for contempt on non-payment of restitution, motions to enforce payment of restitution, and coordinating restitution collection between the Department of Probation and the Office of the District Attorney
- Responsible for answering telephone calls, general filing, and operating all office equipment
- Assists the Legal Secretary/Receptionist, the Administrative Secretary, and the Office Administrator with their duties
- Responsible for taking restitution and deferred disposition payments
- Responsible for all other duties assigned by the District Attorney, his/her designee, and /or the Office Administrator
Specifications/Qualifications:
Must be proficient in the use of computer programs and case management systems; must be able to work in a fast paced, highly stressful office with minimum supervision; must have a high degree of independence, be self-motivated and have the ability to work well independently; must have a good understanding of court procedures and the Criminal Justice System; and must be able to deal effectively and pleasantly with a diverse public.
