GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator III is a manual labor position skilled in the maintenance and operation of trucks, graders, front end-loaders, dozers, tractors and other construction, automotive and related motorized equipment used for road construction, utility maintenance, and snow/ice removal operations for the Public Works Department. The employee in this position should be able to operate all equipment (including all attachments) and carry out assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and productively. The typical time of an employee in this position is spent operating all public works equipment, performing highway repairs, snow removal duties, bushhogging/mowing, sewer/stormwater repairs, and general labor as required. Work in this position is typically unsupervised while in progress and periodically checked upon completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Be able to efficiently operate a heavy-duty truck, grader, loader, dozer, backhoe, or other motorized construction equipment safely and according to State, Federal and Local traffic laws and regulations.
- Work with little or no supervision
- Provide input on equipment replacement needs.
- Be available to work a 24-hour schedule (as necessary) during winter months to assist in snow removal duties as directed.
- Performs a variety of street, drainage, parking lot & sidewalk maintenance and construction.
- Installs emergency & job side traffic control signage.
- Ability to set and maintain grades, properly install sewer/stormwater pipe and catch basins.
- Always work safely while on the job and abide by all Federal and State safety regulations.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Have knowledge of the State, Federal and Local traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Perform varied work assignments using truck, grader, front-end loader, backhoe, bulldozer, and related motorized construction equipment as required.
- Have knowledge of geography in the Town, including the street locations.
- Drive truck transporting dirt, gravel, and construction materials in road maintenance activities as required.
- Load trucks with sand and salt using front end loaders as part of ice and snow removal efforts. In summer, may load trucks with gravel as required.
- Operate snowplow, sidewalk plow and sander as required.
- Perform routine manual labor under adverse climatic conditions as required.
- May perform carpentry, masonry & painting work, including the building or repairing of structures.
- Must be available for emergency operations or overtime as required.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES:
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience in the operation of heavy equipment and trucks with the ability to make minor adjustments and perform necessary basic service maintenance.
- Completion of high school education or equivalent.
- Preference will be given to additional technical training (welding, electrical and hydraulic).
- Experience with record keeping and excel spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of the work
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck operation.
- Knowledge of proper material transportation and load securement.
- Knowledge of "dig-safe" laws
- Knowledge of MDOT/MUTCD road signage requirements
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Class B motor vehicle operator's license (or ability to acquire within 60 days)
- Must participate in random drug/alcohol screening.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Regular physical activity required including driving, walking, standing, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift, carry, and position objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques, up to 50 lbs. above shoulders, lift and carry up to 75 lbs. and push or pull 150 lbs. Normally outdoors in noisy and sometimes unpleasant situations with exposure to extreme elements and temperatures.
