A.This is a union position subject to the current agreement between the Town of Mount Desert andTeamsters Union Local 340.

B.Background Requirements
1.Demonstrated ability to successfully assist others with the work necessary to maintain a fleet ofvehicles and mechanical equipment comprised of different makes and models of vehicles and equipmentfor Town departments such as public works, wastewater, police, fire, etc. including but not limited to,dump trucks, loader-backhoes, loaders, street sweepers, sidewalk plows, police cruisers, fire apparatus,school busses, etc.
2.Possession of a Class B CDL or ability to obtain one within six (6)-months of hire.
3.Hands-on experience with the servicing, operation and maintenance of motorized vehicles and heavyequipment and formal training in the same.
4.Possess knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances involved in the operation and maintenance ofmotorized vehicles and equipment.
5.Possess a proven ability to operate safely vehicles and motorized equipment, including but not limitedto, loader-backhoes, loaders, street sweepers, sidewalk plows, dump trucks, packer trucks, school busesand firefighting apparatus.
6.Ability to operate a standard transmission.
7.Employee to possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire, all inspection licenses necessary toconduct State ofMaine inspections on all town vehicles and equipment or ability to obtain same within six(6)month mandatory probationary period.
8.Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software including Word or Excel or be willing to learn.
9.Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent plus specialized training and experience indiesel and heavy equipment operation and maintenance. Preference will be given to an applicant withpost-secondary training in diesel and heavy equipment operation and maintenance training.
C.Candidate Characteristics/Requirements
1.Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to maintain licensing requirements and to work onvaried work assignments.
2.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other Town workers and thegeneral public.
3.Willingness to be on-call following successful completion of the required six-month probationaryperiod or as determined by Town management.
4.Possess physical strength and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and on adaily basis in varying weather conditions.
5.Willing to work in extreme weather conditions as required by Town management.
6.Have a documented or demonstrated ability to perform skilled manual work.
7.Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently as needed without relying on others toschedule entire workload.
8.Ability to learn to operate the town’s snow plowing and removal equipment and vehicles within thesix-month probationary period.
9.Certified in, or willingness to obtain certification in, operations and maintenance of fire fightingvehicles and associated fire equipment and apparatus.
10.Employees are subject to non-scheduled call-in work.
11.To be on call 24-7 throughout the winter snow plowing and sanding season. The duration of the seasonvaries year to year with the weather. A liberal overtime policy is in effect related to this requirement. Timeoff from this schedule can be requested and is based on review of the request by Town management staff.
Special Requirements
Employee to provide own hand tools with drives from ¼” to ½” and wrenches to 1 ½” and other tools and diagnostic equipment required in a general toolbox. It is recommended that any prospective candidate request a meeting with the Town’s mechanic and highway superintendent to discuss what is specifically required for the employee to provide.
D.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•Operates diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven, etc. tools.
•Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment including automobiles, light and heavytrucks, fire equipment, loaders, loader/backhoes, sweepers, mowers, light equipment, and tools, etc.
•Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair andmaintenance work.
•Repair’s brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assembliesand related systems.
•Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work.
•Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
•Ability to keep maintenance records and process work orders.
•Performs road tests to locate defects in equipment operation.
•Provides emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment as needed and appropriate.
•Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Town management staff.
E.Candidate Characteristics
1.Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to maintain licensing requirements and to work onvaried work assignments. Mechanic B works under the direct supervision of the Head Mechanic.
2.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other workers and the generalpublic.
3.Willingness to be on-call following successful completion of the required six-month mandatoryprobationary period or as determined by Town management.
4.Possess physical strength and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and on adaily basis.
5.Willing to work in extreme weather conditions as required by Town management.
6.Have a documented or demonstrated ability to perform skilled manual work.

F.Work Environment
The work environment characteristics are typical to those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of the position, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts in both inside and outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, snow, rain, and extreme variations in temperature depending upon the season. The employee works on ladders, on creepers, bends, lifts, pulls, etc.
G.Nature of Work
Examples of Work (Illustrative Only)
1.Operates moderately heavy trucks in performance of public works duties such as road maintenanceactivities.
2.Operates a snowplow and sander or sidewalk plow.
3.Drives a light or heavy truck transporting dirt, gravel, and construction materials; may assist in loadingor unloading trucks using loader.
4.Performs general maintenance on vehicles that may involve winterizing trucks and plow maintenance.
5.Performs varied maintenance work including hot topping, sidewalks, cold patching potholes, rebuildingstorm drains, sewer lines and replacing of culverts.
6.Cleans or sweeps streets and completes other special projects as needed.
7.Picks up debris such as blow downs, straightens signs and posts, picks up leaves, brush, and other trash.
8.Other work assigned by Town management.
H.Notes
1.The Town will conduct a background check of any prospective candidate.
2.Selection of the successful candidate will be based solely on the Town’s assessment of the informationprovided by the candidate and any additional information obtained by the Town. The decision of theTown is final.
3.Any offer of employment to a candidate is contingent on the results of a mandatory pre-employmentphysical and mandatory drug and alcohol tests. The Town will pay for Town-approved costs associatedwith the physical and tests. The Town’s appointed healthcare provider will perform the physical. TheTown’s designee will conduct the drug and alcohol tests. Any decision made by the Town based on thephysical or tests is final.
