Town of Sabattus - Chief of Police

The Town of Sabattus, ME is seeking a progressive, community-oriented Police Chief to lead this full-service MLEAP accredited police department (Operating Budget $780,000; and Capital Budget $46,500) including authorized staffing of 9 FT officers (including Chief), 3 PT officers, 1 shared ACO, and 1 FT Administrative Assistant.  With approximately 5,134 residents, Sabattus is a quintessential New England community found in Androscoggin County.  Sabattus is approximately 26.91 square miles, with 1.2 square miles of water.  Sabattus is a popular recreation and fishing destination with trophy Pike and Smallmouth Bass; it has rolling hills, lush woodlands, and the scenic shores on the nearly 2,000 acres of Sabattus Pond.  With easy access to I-95, Sabattus is only moments away from the Twin Cities of Lewiston and Auburn; and is just 41 miles north of Portland.  The Town has a Selectmen-Manager form of government with an appointed Town Manager and an elected 5-member Board of Selectmen.  

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Police Science or related field, and a minimum of ten years’ experience in police work, with five (5) years at the rank of Sergeant or higher is required. Maine Police Certification is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: budgeting, crafting collaborative interagency relationships, communicating effectively in writing and verbally. The ability to make independent judgments, which have impact on the Department and the Town, is essential. The ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the general public; as well as strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy are vitally important. Excellent moral character, good powers of observation and memory are required. While the Chief is not expected to fill a patrol shift, this is a working Chief position who will occasionally provide back-up, investigative services and address special functions within the community.

Regardless of residency, the new Police Chief is expected to be a fully engaged member of the Sabattus community.  Salary range is $80,000 to $90,000, starting salary commensurate with qualifications. Additional information relating to this opportunity has been posted at www.mrigov.com/career.
