Job Opportunity: Fire & EMS Chief / EMA Director
The Town of Thomaston is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to serve as our Fire & EMS Chief / Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director. This full-time, salaried position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community by leading both the Fire and EMS departments, coordinating emergency management efforts, and fostering a collaborative, responsive public safety culture.
Position Overview
This is a Monday through Friday position, with many required administrative tasks in addition to emergency response responsibilities. The Chief is expected to oversee day-to-day operations, manage budgets and policies, and maintain a strong presence at the Thomaston Fire and EMS Station. Additional hours are required for emergency calls.
Key Responsibilities
As the Fire & EMS Chief / EMA Director, you will:
- Administer and supervise all Fire and EMS Department operations, personnel, facilities, and equipment.
- Assume command at emergency scenes, ensuring effective response and safety.
- Prepare and manage department budgets, policies, and training programs.
- Conduct building inspections in conjunction with the Code Enforcement Officer to ensure compliance with local and state codes.
- Develop and maintain the Town’s Emergency Operations Plan and coordinate disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
- Identify and secure grants to support departmental initiatives.
- Provide fire prevention and emergency medical education to schools, businesses, and residents.
Qualifications
To thrive in this role, candidates should meet the following requirements:
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible firefighting, rescue, and EMS experience, with supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
- Education/Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training. Certifications in Fire Fighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and an Advanced EMT license are required. A Paramedic license is helpful but not required.
- Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills; proficiency in information technology and public safety systems.
- Other Requirements: A valid Maine driver’s license with an insurable status, a vehicle for job use, and the ability to meet required emergency response times. Candidates must pass a criminal background check.
