Position Summary:
The operator performs a variety of basic and semi-skilled labor in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Learns to perform a variety of skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of the treatment facility and related equipment
- Performs a variety of general maintenance duties in and around the wastewater plant including washdowns of clarifiers, filters, oxidation ditches, and scum tanks.
- Performs a variety of routine building and grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, weeding, painting, and housekeeping.
- Assists and learns to perform treatment plant safety inspection rounds, monitoring and documenting plant operations.
- Assists and learns with the inspection, operations and maintenance of the facility’s pump stations.
- Assist and learn in collection of various samples for laboratory tests; perform some laboratory analysis such as pH, temperature, settleable solids, TSS, BOD, dissolved oxygen.
- Maintain and clean all treatment facility buildings and grounds.
- Assist in monitoring and inspecting the septage receiving operations.
- Assist and learn the solids handling operations.
- Asist in offloading deliveries.
- Attends training and safety meetings.
- Will be required to work in the On-call rotation once trained (24 hour on-call coverage 3 PM Friday – 6AM Monday)
- May perform other work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of -General maintenance and repair work; operation of power-driven equipment used in maintenance and repair including high pressure washer, tractors, mowers and various hand and power tools. Basic record keeping techniques. Safety requirements for the operations of trucks and other equipment. Standard principles of biology, chemistry, and basic algebra. Safe work practices.
Ability to -Learn to solve problems logically. Learn standard laboratory and plant operations procedures. Communicate clearly and concisely. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Learn to perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment facilities and related equipment. Operate power driven equipment used in the maintenance and repair of the facilities. Learn to inspect facilities, systems and equipment for maintenance and repair needs. Learn applicable mechanical, electrical, wastewater safety codes and regulations. Maintain routine records. Learn to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and sketches. Perform heavy manual labor. Drive and operate trucks and equipment safely and effectively.
Licenses and Certificates -Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must posses and maintain a Grade I Wastewater Operator Certificate within a 1 year of employment. Within 24-months, must obtain State of Maine commercial driver’s class “B” license with tanker endorsement.
Physical Abilities and Work Environment -In addition to the minimum and job duties listed in this position, the following are required: Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a typical field setting and related equipment, loader, tractor, mower, and all light equipment necessary for the job. Will be required to lift 80 lbs. on occasions.

Education, Experience and Requirement:
Experience -One year of general maintenance work experience is desirable.
Education -Graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent with supplemental course work in biology, chemistry, or a related field.
Pre-employment drug screen – The successful candidate for employment will be mandated to submit a clean drug screen prior to the start of employement.
