Athletic Facilities Supervisor

Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department – 40 hours/week (days, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) - The City of Portland, Maine seeks a dynamic, experienced leader in the Athletic Facilities Division for the Department of Parks, Recreation & Facilities.  This is a working supervisory position that directs and coordinates the construction, maintenance and management of City owned grass, synthetic turf athletic fields and surrounding facilities throughout the City.  This position’s assignments involve specific areas of expertise and knowledge of turf management, construction, and operations of the City’s athletic facilities, as well as, supervising permanent and seasonal employees and working with private contractors working on City properties as needed.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Extensive experience with preventive maintenance on specialized turf equipment by establishing and managing standard and non-standard turf management practices.  Supervises the application of all synthetic and organic herbicides and pesticides; waters and fertilizes grounds; maintains records on work activities and written records of pesticide applications to comply with the Maine Department of Agriculture, the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department’s Integrated Pest Management plan and the City of Portland’s Pesticide Ordinance.  Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, private sector contractors, City departments, supervisors, and employees to effectively obtain satisfactory work output.  Oversees and participates in snow plowing, removal and sanding operations in many different locations including grass and synthetic athletic fields; assists other City departments in snow operations.  Provides instruction to individuals and crew in terms of equipment usage and safety in accordance with local and state regulations.  Oversees maintenance schedules of equipment within the section and conducts minor mechanical service and repair of related equipment, small engine equipment and related tools.  Considerable knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of work.  Ability to work with a diverse population.  Requirements of Work: Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot irrigation and drainage systems.  Working knowledge of soil chemical properties, i.e. soil acidity/alkalinity, cation exchange capacity, salt concentrations, phytotoxic contaminants and nutrient availability, as well as, the components of a fertilizer label, fertilizer formulations, ratios, and analysis and how to calculate the nutrients applied by a specific rate on a specified area.  Ability to identify weeds (grasses, sedges and broadleaves) and understand their growth cycles in both cool and warm season grasses and how climatic conditions and management practices which may influence weed development and the ability to identify turf diseases and knowledge of proper response.  Experience and Training Desired: Graduation from high school with a college degree preferred with emphasis in Turf Management or a related area or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in this position; minimum 3-years working and experience in Sports Field/Turf Management; thorough knowledge and experience working on natural athletic fields: turf maintenance, cutting infields, core and tine aeration, overseeding, topdressing, squaring and lining fields, base replacement, mound building, field leveling and mowing techniques; thorough knowledge and experience working on synthetic athletic fields: sweeping, lining, disinfecting, general cleaning, equipment placement, seam repairs, turf replacement, compaction relief and snow removal.  Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Maine Commercial Pesticide License in Turf (3B) and Utility Right of Way Vegetation Management (6A) or another state’s equivalent which must be transferred to a State of Maine License within the probationary period and/or within (6) months of appointment to the position.  Accredited Organic Land Care Professional (AOLCP) within the probationary period and/or within (6) months of appointment to the position.  Must possess a valid Class C driver's license and have a good driving record.  Must be First Aid & CPR certified.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.   Starting salary rate is, $862.80/week.
