Due to an upcoming retirement, we are currently seeking qualified candidates for the full-time salaried exempt position of Fire Chief. This is a critical role responsible for ensuring public welfare through the effective management of a progressive fire and emergency service delivery system that serves the Town of Gorham and provides mutual support to surrounding communities. The Fire Chief oversees 1 FT Deputy Chief, 2 FT Administrative Assistants, 1 FT Fire Mechanic (shared with Town of Windham), 1 PT Fire Inspector, 10 FT Firefighters (all trained at the level of EMT or Paramedic), 2 Call Company Deputies, and over 150 Call Company personnel and live-in students. The Town’s EMS personnel respond to over 3,000 calls per year and are assigned to six stations, including four stations within Gorham’s 59 square miles and two shared stations located in neighboring towns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field required. A minimum of 6 years’ of supervisory experience in the fire service required. Extensive experience in modern Fire suppression, EMS, and EMA Command operations. Must be licensed in the State of Maine as an EMT or higher and have Firefighter II certification or higher. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Must have the ability to respond to emergency scenes, sometimes outside of normal work hours, and perform all essential duties of this position. Valid Class C or higher Driver’s License required. Will need to pass a post-offer physical exam and comprehensive background screening process.
