Patrol Officer Wanted to Join Our Team
The Town of Buxton has an immediate opening for a highly motivated full-time police officer to join our growing team of law enforcement professionals. Located 15 miles west of Portland, Buxton is a rural community encompassing 41 square miles with a population of 8,000+ residents. Buxton Police Department offers 24/7 coverage and is an energetic, community-oriented agency focused on professionalism and “esprit de corps” under progressive leadership.
SUMMARY OF POSITION Under general supervision, patrol officers are responsible for enforcing state and local laws, maintaining order, protecting life and property, investigating crimes, and maintaining a feeling of security in the community. Patrol officers will enforce traffic laws and local parking ordinances, investigate accidents, and assist in ensuring safe roadways within the community. Officers will be required to complete detailed reports on all crimes, arrests and accidents and be available for any scheduled court proceedings. All duties are to be performed while engaging the community in a positive and professional manner.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS Candidates must be 21 years of age and hold an active Maine driver’s license as well as an associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field or a combination of relevant training and experience as well as having successfully completed the Maine Law Enforcement Pre-Service School. Candidates must be in good physical health to perform the essential job function of law enforcement. Candidates shall not have a criminal or adverse traffic record and will be required to pass a polygraph, medical, psychological test, and extensive background check. Preference is given to graduates of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP). Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete the 18-week BLETP within the first year of employment.
BENEFITS The Town of Buxton offers a competitive wage package with an entry wage of $51,809.00. A higher starting wage of up to $62,990.30 for experienced officers is at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Incentive pay includes stipends for education and physical fitness. Paid time off includes vacation and sick time. The Town of Buxton offers health, dental and optical insurance and, short-term and long-term insurance. Current retirement plans include a 457-compensation plan with a town contribution of up to 6% of wages after one year of continuous employment. The town is actively exploring enrolling in Maine State Retirement.
