PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The City of South Portland is seeking a full-time Foreperson to join our Public Works team. The selected candidate will work in our new state-of-the-art Municipal Services Facility under the supervision of the Public Works Superintendent and Public Works Director. This is a full-time, benefit and PTO eligible, 40 hour per week, union position.
The Foreperson position is a working position requiring direct physical labor and is responsible for the execution of public works projects including effective direction and participation in the use of heavy equipment and direction and participation of work crews. Projects include, but are not limited to, road maintenance and repair; sidewalk maintenance and repair, sign maintenance and management. In the winter, work includes, but is not limited to, the supervision and participation of snow removal; salting and sanding of roads and operation of snow plow equipment as well as supervising these activities. Must be able to follow and enforce a strong emphasis on safety and be able to operate essential computer software. The Foreperson must be able to work long hours during snowstorms, ice storms, hurricanes, and other weather and non-weather related emergencies.
The Foreperson must possess a high school diploma or GED and 5 years experience in the Public Works field. Three (3) years supervisory experience highly preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class B commercial driver’s license. Must pass a post-offer physical and drug screen and participate in the Drug and Alcohol random testing pool for the duration of employment.

Starting pay is minimally $26.32 per hour, yet may be higher for internal unit candidates, pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual wage increases are also subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
