The City of Augusta is seeking an experienced, dedicated fire service professional to serve as its next Fire Chief. Augusta, home to Maine’s state capital, is located in the heart of the beautiful Kennebec Valley in central Maine, just an hour from Portland. Augusta’s population totals almost 19,000, however, the daytime population expands to 60,000 putting it on par with Maine’s largest cities and necessitating municipal services to meet those demands. The Fire Department is a full-time department of 52 employees that provides fire, EMS, and rescue services and responds to approximately 7,000 service calls annually of which 85% are EMS calls. There are no per diem employees.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced incident commander with a background in all matters related to modern firefighting, emergency medical services, and emergency management including strategic planning, organizational and personnel management, budget development, cost control, policy development, and succession planning. A demonstrated record of ethical leadership, excellent written and oral communications skills, an ability to foster a work environment that promotes employee involvement and accountability, and expertise in working effectively with and maintaining good working relationships with other City officials and departments, department employees, outside agencies, citizens, and mutual aid departments is also desired.
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in fire science or a related field, or the equivalent in directly related experience and/or training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and at least ten years of experience in the fire service including a minimum of five years in a supervisory position. A valid Class C Maine driver’s license is required.
This is a full-time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package including medical insurance, a pension, and generous paid time off. Salary $88,296 to $115,190 annually, depending on the skills and background of the candidate.
