FULL TIME DISPATCHER – CUMBERLAND COUNTY REGIONAL COMMUNICATION CENTER

 

Picturesque Cumberland County is the State’s most populous county having a population of 289,977. Its largest city is Portland and the county geographically extends from Casco Bay to the Lakes Region. Cumberland County has the second largest body of water in the state, Sebago Lake, which provides numerous recreational opportunities. The County is the economic and industrial center of the state, having a strong corporate presence of major domestic and international companies.  The County has over 400 dedicated employees, all focused on providing the best customer service to the County residents.  Cumberland County is represented by five elected county commissioners and the county manager runs the daily operations.

JOB PURPOSE:  Assists the public by taking both emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatch that information to the proper responding fire departments, emergency medical services or law enforcement agencies in the county as required. Full-time position with full benefits available.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: High School diploma or equivalent, computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office/Word, knowledge of county and towns geographic layout. Must successfully complete the following within one year of employment: terminal operator control course, CPR and Emergency Medical Dispatching Course. Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to remain calm and maintain control in stressful situations.  All new hires shall provide documentation to Human Resources that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 before they are cleared to start work.                 Preferred: Minimum one (1) year in the public safety field and previous experience in radio communications desired.

Candidates must successfully complete Criticall exam and background investigation.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists public by answering calls for emergency and non-emergency service, including directory assistance and reports of crimes having been committed or being committed.
  • Dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls by assigning the necessary field units to investigate complaint and/or assigns responsible emergency service unit (fire & rescue / deputy) to handle situation.
  • Assists caller by keeping them calm to be able to get the information needed to properly dispatch proper emergency unit(s).
  • Dispatches proper emergency units and keeps them informed by relaying information between caller and responding units.
  • Maintains accurate records by entering calls into the computer and update, modify and maintain accurate information on the same.
  • Ensures accurate records by maintaining various logs and files deemed to be the responsibility of the communications division.
  • Assists public safety personnel by responding to their requests for information such as generating teletypes and entering National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) in computer.
  • Assists other departments with crimes that may enter the county by monitoring a separate channel which includes 16 frequencies of area agencies surrounding Cumberland County patrol areas.
  • Assists public safety personnel by monitoring teletype for incoming messages from other agencies on important information that may contain information regarding officer safety and wanted persons and stolen items.
  • Assists public safety personnel by providing teletype information requests for D.M.V, M.W.M/ NCIC wants/warrants and reply by radio or telephone.
  • Maintains warrants information by entering, modifying or canceling warrants into the MWM/NCIC wants computer using proper codes and procedures set by each.
  • Assists courts by receiving and providing requests for warrant recalls from system.
  • Assists other departments by researching computer records for information needed to assist them in their investigations.
  • Assists public safety personnel by handling requests for Division of Motor Vehicle records.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Supports the County’s safety and health policies by attending required safety training programs; reporting all accidents and suspected safety hazards to supervisor.
  • Fulfills job function by participating as an active member of training; participating on county task forces and performing other responsibilities as assigned.
