Neighborhood Champion

The City of South Portland is currently seeking two Neighborhood Champions to join our team from April through September 2022.

Position Summary: The Neighborhood Champion will play a central role in establishing and maintaining food waste drop-off sites, and delivering personal, door-to-door outreach to community members in the West End neighborhood of South Portland.  Personal outreach and education is a key strategy toward building community awareness and encouraging a change in recycling practices. The Neighborhood Champion will also help to inform the development of future city-wide initiatives as South Portland works toward its goal of reducing organic waste by 70% by 2030. 

Supervision Received/ Exercised: Reports to the Sustainability Director.  This position has no direct supervision of any staff.


Experience: No experience necessary.


Preference for speakers of French, Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Arabic, and residents of the West End or community members with close ties to the West End.


Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class “C” driver’s license throughout employment and must have their own reliable transportation for possible work-day transportation within the city.


Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule.  Neighborhood Champions will work approximately 6-8 hours per week, although some weeks may require more or fewer hours.
