City of Gardiner-Public Works Mechanic
The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, place high value on superior internal customer service, possess organizational skills, and have experience with both gas and diesel vehicles as well as heavy equipment. Commercial Class B Driver’s License and tools are required.
Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all City vehicles and mechanical equipment. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work. Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles and performs or schedules needed repairs. Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. Purchase’s parts and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance. Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment. Oversees maintenance performed by the public works department’s heavy equipment operators and drivers.
This is a union position (Teamsters Union Local #340) that consists of 40 hours per week. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Winter Hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00AM to 4:30PM, Friday 7:00AM to 11:00AM. Significant overtime may be required during winter snow removal operations.
The preferred candidate will have at least one year of experience in a similar work environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Class B commercial driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within one (6) months of hire, is required.
The starting hourly pay rate is $19.75 to $21.81, depending on experience and qualifications.
