Town of Freeport – Social Service Liaison
The Town of Freeport, Maine (pop. 9,000) is looking for a community-oriented behavioral health specialist to join our team. Freeport is a desirable residential community, as well as one of Maine’s leading tourist destinations with millions of visitors annually. The town has a vibrant retail/commercial base and is the home of world-famous retailer L.L.Bean, Inc. Located conveniently 20 miles north of Portland, Maine’s largest city, Freeport is known for its coastal and recreational amenities.
The successful candidate will be a trained mental health and/or social services worker embedded in the police department, able to provide intervention, education, outreach, and case management. The specialist will function independently and act as a connection between Freeport residents and treatment services or facilities. The specialist will represent the Police Department in multiple settings under the direction of the Police Department.
Job duties include providing intervention, referral, advocacy, and facilitation of services in partnership with the Police Department, working with individuals including those known to have mental illness and their families.
Duties also include co-response with Officers to calls concerning mental health issues to evaluate needs. This position will provide training and education to Public Safety employees and the community regarding mental health resources available in the region and have a clear understanding of the provisions of HIPAA and 42, CFR Part 2 (Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records).
The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in social work, social science, behavioral/mental health, psychology or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Must possess State of Maine license requirement of LCPC, LCPC-C, LCSW or be eligible and obtain within six months of hire. Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with individuals who have mental health issues. Any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
