The Sabattus Fire Department is hiring (4) full-time FF/EMT’s to add to our daily staffing model. These positions are funded through a 3-year SAFER grant. These positions are not guaranteed beyond 3-years, and are dependent solely upon annual local funding. Staffing daily will consist of (1) FT working a 24/48/24/96 rotation for a 42hr work week (1-on, 2-off, 1-on, 4-off). In addition, there will be (2) PT FF/EMT’s working 8:00-16:00 for an engine crew of 3 per shift.


This is a skilled firefighting and emergency medical position that requires the employee to respond to a wide range of medical, traumatic and fire suppression-related emergencies in a community encompassing 26.91 square miles with a year-round population of nearly 5,044 residents. The department's annual call volume exceeds 600 calls for service per year. The person filling this position must be mature, honest, compassionate, able to work well with others, and be willing and able to interact positively with the public. The candidate must be prepared to respond to fire and EMS calls in all types of weather, day or night. Due to the geography of the community the candidate must be prepared for emergencies on/in the rural area, highway, residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, lake, as well as agricultural settings.

The person filling this position will become involved in station duties, public education, in-house education for the professional development of our personnel, equipment and apparatus maintenance, disinfecting and cleaning of equipment and apparatus, computer related reports and assignments, and a variety of other tasks that may be assigned by the Fire Chief or his designee. The person filling this position must be:

➢ Knowledgeable in current EMS standards applicable to their licensure level as outlined in state and local protocols

➢ Knowledgeable and proficiently skilled in all fire suppression related techniques as outlined within

➢ Proficiently skilled in all patient care techniques that may be performed by a Maine licensed Emergency Medical Technician as appropriate for their licensure level

➢ In good physical and mental condition

➢ Able to develop a rapport with a vast cross section of co-workers including call members, part-time and full-time personnel, mutual aid fire department personnel, local and state police officers and other town employees.


- Must hold and maintain a valid Maine Driver’s license.

- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred.

- Interior Structural Firefighter certification; Pro-Board Firefighter I&II preferred.

- Successful completion of a state certified EVOC class.

- State recognized Basic Pump Operators Course.

- Hazardous Materials Operations

- Must have the ability to work fixed and rotating shifts.

- Must hold and maintain a valid Maine EMT license. Candidates with a current EMR license may apply and may be hired with a grace period of up to 12 months from their date of hire to become licensed as an EMT on their own time. The Sabattus Fire Department will pay the class tuition.

- Must successfully complete a comprehensive background check.

- Must successfully complete a post offer comprehensive physical examination.

Department Information

The Town of Sabattus is located in Androscoggin County and is located 3 miles to the east of the City of Lewiston.  The population for the Town of Sabattus is 5,044 year-round residents. These individuals are spread over 26.91 square miles. Our response area is a cross between a rural and suburban area.

The Sabattus Fire Department is a combination fire & rescue organization made up of 29 members. The Sabattus Fire Department operates out of two stations in the town. One station is located at 72 Main Street, that is our Central Fire Station, this station houses two engines, brush truck & rescue boat. The substation is located at 44 Crowley Road, this station houses a tanker and our traffic trailer. Both of these stations are primarily run as call company stations however 7-days a week from the hours of 8:00 am – 4:00 pm our central station is staffed with 2 FF/EMS providers. Additionally; 7-nights a week from 6:00p-6:00a we have 1 FF/EMS provider on-call from their home with a department vehicle.
