Identities and Privileges: What they Are, What they Aren’t, and Why it Matters to Municipalities

Dr. Janet Bennett defines culture as “the learned and shared values, beliefs, and behaviors of a group of interacting people”. By that definition, any group we belong to can arguably be a culture! Our family, our town, our state, our nation, our race or ethnicity, to name just a few. How do these groups influence us and the experiences we have? How do they influence our perspectives?

For some, the word “privilege” elicits strong emotions; it can act as a lightning rod and put people immediately on the defensive, making it hard to move the conversation forward. Join Maine Intercultural as they provide an inclusive working definition and challenge participants to become curious about the different ways in which we’ve all been affected by privilege, the way it impacts our work, and what we can do about it to create an inclusive, just workplace which serves people equitably.
